On the eve of Disorient's fifth year anniversary we launched our first ever label compilation of where we've come from and where we are going with our expanding portfolio of sound. Started in 1997 by as a extention of the Mr Bongo record shop in Tokyo, an idea to release more Japanese artists in europe who couldn't get the exposure and whose release's couldn't get in to the western market due to weighty import price's and bring the music of the east and west together. And with almost forty release's we have done our best to release a mixture of old forgotten tracks, new talent worldwide and extending are own profile of both Japanese and European artists.
Alongside the music, the design and packaging has also been as important in order to make the release look and sound as best as possible. For this we decided to employ the talents of Kai Clements, a free thinking visonary of modern design.
First up the summer sound of Berlin Techno baron Thomas Schumacher who linked up with Japanese vocalist Kaori to turn out their mellow take on of the Detroit Inner City house classic Good Life straight into our exclusive track from Chieko Kinbara the Tokyo stringstress featuring Brazilian songstress Liliana Chachain (Negrocan / Da-lata / Arakatuba) as a taster to what is to come from the classicly trained player whose debut album is also on Disorient.
It would have been criminal to miss out the biggest selling single - the re-work of UK funksters Atmosfear from production dons Masters At Work which five years on still gets regular plays peaktime on the worlds most dissurning dancefloors. After MAW delivered 14 mixes of the track this Unreleased Moody Mix picks out the best elements from all of them. Next up the UK soundclash of Sheffield's All seeing eye's Spook - Parrot and Dean line up Moloko A-list celeb vocalist Roisin Murphy to muscle up a scary version of Grace Jones 'Feel Up' recorded back in '95 on a wet Wednesday afternoon in Yorkshire. All members have since gone on to secure huge pop carrers since and given the twisted mix from since disbanded Salt City Orchestra - this remains the legacy.
Back to Tokyo and Takada the man Pioneer pull in to test drive all there new products comes through with Ole La from '97 which Muzik mag had in their top 3 tunes from Ibiza that summer. This gets the rub down treatment from Ashley Beedle intwinging house beats with New York latino-style piano licks, an essential marker in the catalogue. Miyazawa one of Japans most eclectric composer/singers, a man who has picked up many influences on his travels provides this Brasilian piece remixed by the Rainer Truby Trio. It links a teutonic fusion of both rhythm and club credibility , alongside the breakbeat drum and bass maestro's Aquasky, under their Tenth & Parker moniker with the ubiquitous Mark Murphy on vocal tells us to Kool Down taking on the skills of King Britt to mix down this slice of laid back style.
Japanese group Coldfeet entertain us with In my Lucid Dream lifted from their Embedded E.P and remixed by Germany's Karma, showing that Disorient has been one of the most versatile and genre defying labels around.
Disorient tied up with Tokyo label Flower to present Su-paka-pooh, whose organic sound and approach bring a sense of warmth to the mix with their rendition of the jazz dance classic 'Theme De Yo Yo' remixed by Restless Soul, Phil Asher who takes us to the dance floor with his live emsemble of musicians including sax player Nathan Haines and keyboard wizard Kaidi Tatham and Basil Black 2 Basic on percussion.
Local golden boys Mr Hermano drop their summer classic of 2001 , Santana's 'Free As The Morning Sun' from the second album on Disorient of the same name which is a shot of inspiration summer soul. Last, but by no means least, the first track released in January 1997 by a young man by the name of Dimitri from Paris. This is his first studio production release and has since gone on to take the world by storm with his music export value now outweighing Brie . Inspired by his many trips to Japan and appearing in the Irvine Welsh film the Acid House, this loofa beat lounge-lizard has set the pace for a plethora of talent .
