Monday Michiru, one of Japan's foremost jazz vocalists turns producer on this latest release from Disorient. Joined on vocals by Loretta Heywood on Gypsy Heart, Carla Vallet on Searching Out The Light and Sonya Vallet for Afternoon Stroll she shows she is no mean producer. On the flip are two totally different mixes - Frankie Valentine has produced a jazz-soaked, dancefloor fuelled tune while Ian O'Brien turns in a beautifully crafted vocal track showing he is a man to watch.
The three vocalists all have an extensive and impressive history of recording behind them. Loretta Heywood was living and working in Tokyo when she met Monday and later worked with Major Force on the original Love TKO project, a release that never saw the light of day in the UK as a proper release, which lead to extensive bootlegging creating quite a buzz at the time. Soon after she teamed up with Bomb The Bass and wrote Winter in July with Tim Simenon, reaching the top 10.
Carla Valet has been based in Tokyo for a few years and has worked with the best of the Japanese artists, including DJ Krush, Mondo Grosso and Monday. She has also released a solo LP Sweet Nostalgia on Nippon Columbia.
Sonya Valet has spent much of her singing career in Spain and has proved to be an instrumental part of the jazz scene over there. She has since spent much time in Tokyo, where she hooked up with Monday to record this EP.
The result is an EP of immense musical quality and skill. At a time when dance tunes are banged out without a care in the world, it's refreshing to hear music which has so much thought and care behind it.
