Rio de Janeiro needs little introduction; its one of the most visited cities in the southern hemisphere and the one that most people think of first when they think of Brazil. We have visited Rio many times and seen the city drastically change over the past 25 years. Our favourite memories of Rio include the cathedral of surf that is Prainha, sunset at the Arpoador rocks, drinking with the Banda Black Rio guys, watching an intense local derby at Maricana, record shopping at Trax with Heitor, spending time in the Mangueira favela, and checking the funk balls with DJ Marlboro... amongst many others.
Rio’s musical heritage is incredibly rich. It gave birth to many genres, including Bossa Nova and Funk Carioca ('Funk from Rio') and is considered to be the centre of the urban music movement in Brazil.
Suffice to say that listing heavy selections that come from Rio born or based artists is not that a challenge - there are a lot to choose from:
Jorge Ben - Filho Maravilha
Banda Black Rio - Maria Fumaca
Claudette - Samba do Avião
Wilson Simonal - Silva Lenheira
Os Originais do Samba – La Vem Salgueiro
Claudia - Deixa Eu Dizer
Marcelo D2 - Desabafo
Chico Barque - Cotidiano
Seu Jorge - Carolina
Marcos Valle - Democustico
Joyce - Aldeia De Ogum
Tim Maia - E Necesario
