'Sample This' - the making of Incredible Bongo Band's 'Apache'

Oct 15, 2012
Sample This is a forthcoming documentary about The Incredible Bongo Band – the mysterious creation of MGM Records Michael Viner renowned for its recording of one of hip-hop’s sonic cornerstones, “Apache.”

Directed by Dan Forrer, the film digs deep into the history of Viner – who was not only an aide to Robert Kennedy in the ’60s, but the A&R guy that signed Debby Boone. It also features interviews with some of the uncredited musicians responsible for “Apache’s” crushin’ drums and percussion – giving it the feel – at least based on its very compelling trailer – of a break-beat take on Standing In the Shadows of Motown. Also featured: Afrika Bambaataa, Questlove, Grandmaster Caz and more.
