In late October 1989, David 'Mr Bongo' Buttle opened his first record shop, underneath Daddy Kool’s Reggae Store on Berwick Street in London. 25 years later and we are still flying the flag for quality music, and are now celebrating a quarter of a century of Mr Bongo.
As part of our 25 years retrospective we will be looking back at some of our favourite releases. Today it's the turn of...
Originally released in 1983 by First Run, was a collaboration between Charlie Ahearn and Fred Braithwaite aka Fab 5 Freddy. Wild Style is regarded as the first hip hop motion picture. The film featured seminal figures such as Fab Five Freddy, Lee Quinones, Lady Pink, the Rock Steady Crew, The Cold Crush Brothers, Queen Lisa Lee of Zulu Nation and Grandmaster Flash.
Tracks from the film have been sampled by artists such as The Wiseguys, De La Soul, A Tribe Called Quest, Beastie Boys, Beck, Cyprus Hill, DJ Shadow, Nas and Public Enemy among others.
We first re-issued the sound track on a sub-label called 'Beyongolia' in 1998 across two 12" singles and a double LP.
Red Bull recently posted an in-depth article on the untold history of the 'breakbeats' from the sound track. It is most definitely worth 5 minutes of your time.
'Down By Law' is featured on our 25 Years Of Mr Bongo compilation.
