Favourite Finds: Deb Grant

Continuing our spotlight series called Favourite Finds, we ask some of our favourite DJs, collectors and selectors to tell us the story behind how they came across one of their most cherished records.

For the next instalment, we’ve asked DJ, BBC 6Music radio broadcaster and seasoned digger, Deb Grant to give us an insight into a special record from her collection.

Born and raised in Dublin, Deb was buying records from an early age, taking up DJing when she was just 15. Fast forward to the present day and she has cemented herself as an in-demand international DJ and much-loved broadcaster, hosting the New Music Fix Daily show on 6music. Deb's life has been spent immersed in music, and through it she has amassed a diverse and detailed knowledge and taste that is clear to see when you hear her behind the decks or showcasing digs from her collection on her socials.

"This is a private press from a plant in Louisiana, it might even be one of one because I’ve never been able to find any information about it anywhere, let alone a second copy. The artist is listed as Club Makaba and the instruments are all played by one person, F. Brooks. It’s an anti-drugs record with pretty starkly literal lyrics - “stay in school! Don’t do drugs!” over gentle marimbas and a highlife style rhythm.

I found it in a shop called Capital City Records in Baton Rouge, about 15 years ago when I was travelling around the Deep South on a greyhound bus buying records (a lot ropier and dingier than it sounds but still a dream trip). This record stood out because of the cover art, and I’m a sucker for a private press, especially when it’s impossible to tell from the sleeve what it’s going to sound like.

It was sealed and the guy on the counter couldn’t tell me anything about it, so I had to wait until I got home to listen to it. I couldn’t believe how perfect it was. Now when I play it out at gigs people come up and ask me what’s playing and I’m like "… good luck!"

Big thanks to Deb for telling us this story for the series. Be sure to keep up-to-date with all of her goings on by giving her a follow on Instagram.
